Tatiana Lysova is a sociologist and researcher at the University of Milano-Bicocca whose work explores the complex relationship between society, security, surveillance and technology.
Her academic journey began in political science before moving into sociology, eventually leading to a PhD focused on how urban insecurity is constructed and how video surveillance becomes framed as a response to it. Her research has examined cities including Milan and Budapest and increasingly extends into digital and authoritarian forms of surveillance. University of Milano-Bicocca
What makes Tatiana’s perspective particularly interesting for 20minwithfrankie is that technology is never just technology. Cameras, data and increasingly AI exist within institutions and societies, shaped by questions of trust, power, security and human behaviour.
Her work invites us to look beyond what technology can do and ask a more difficult question: what does its use do to us, to our cities and to the societies we build?
